Opening Launch: Friday 15th of September 2023, from 6pm, Onwards Gallery, Hamilton.
In the ‘Confluence’ project, my artistic process began as an exploration of the confluences of rivers, where two rivers or streams meet and become one. My curiosity expanded to encompass the myriad confluences that shape life – where people, places, time, paths, and emotions intersect and intertwine.
As I delved deeper into the concept of ‘confluence,’ I realized the storytelling potential contained within my photographic subjects. I began writing stories to give a voice to the subjects in my photographs – the mountains, the refreshing summer rain, the ancient ferns, and the meandering rivers. Through these short stories, I allow objects, phenomena, and places to speak. I began asking questions like: What would the summer rain have to say about desire? How would the sun feel about being eclipsed or outshone? What would seaweed say about establishing a stronghold? How does a mountain feel about the marks made by humans?
